SPC vinyl floors for €15 or €40? How to spot quality.
Two floors, both sold as “SPC vinyl”, one costs three times as much. The difference is not on the price tag but on the data sheet. Here is how to read it in five minutes.

Same name, different floor
“SPC vinyl floor” only describes the build: a stone-based core with a decor and a wear layer on top. How thick the wear layer is, how strong the core, whether an underlay is built in – the name doesn’t say. That is where the price range of roughly €15 to €45 per m² for the material comes from.
The five points that explain the price
The clear layer over the decor, measured in mm. It decides how long the decor resists scratches and wear. The main price driver.
Under EN ISO 10874: 21–23 for homes from light to heavy use, 31–33 for commercial from light to heavy. For hallways and family life, 32 or 33 is worth it.
An SPC core is waterproof and dimensionally stable. Some “click vinyl” has a wood-fibre (HDF) core. It is cheaper but not waterproof.
An integrated underlay saves buying a separate one. Look for a dB value. Without one, there is nothing to compare.
TÜV, QNG or emission classes show that values were tested independently. A seller without a data sheet usually has a reason.
Which wear layer for which room?
| Wear layer | Suits | Material (market, DE) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 mm | Entry level, rarely used rooms | approx. €10–20 |
| 0.3 mm | Bedrooms and guest rooms, normal home use | approx. €15–30 |
| 0.4 mm | Living rooms with medium use | approx. €20–40 |
| 0.55 mm | Hallway, kitchen, kids, pets, light commercial | approx. €25–55 · COREPEL €39–47 RRP |
| 0.7 mm | Very heavy use, commercial | approx. €35–70 |

To be honest: when the cheaper floor is enough
For a guest room, a study without a castor chair or a flat you will renovate again in a few years, an SPC vinyl floor with a 0.3 mm wear layer can be perfectly fine. Where many steps, water, dog claws or chair castors hit the floor every day, 0.55 mm pays off: the decor stays like new for longer and you don’t have to relay the floor early.
The price in the bigger picture
Installation costs the same for both qualities. Over 20 m², the material difference between a 0.3 and a 0.55 mm wear layer is typically a few hundred euros – spread over many years of use. For the full bill, read What does a new floor for 20 m² cost?

START FLOOR STUDIOFrequently asked questions
Which wear layer do I need for an SPC vinyl floor?
For bedrooms and guest rooms, 0.3 mm is usually enough. For hallway, kitchen, children’s rooms and homes with pets, 0.55 mm is the safe choice. All COREPEL floors have a 0.55 mm wear layer.
Why do SPC vinyl floors cost €15 or €45 per m²?
The name only describes the build. The price depends mainly on the wear layer, plus core thickness, integrated underlay, surface and tested quality.
Is every click vinyl waterproof?
No. Click vinyl with a wood-fibre (HDF) core is not waterproof. An SPC core is. Look for “waterproof right through the core” on the data sheet.
What does use class 33 mean?
Under EN ISO 10874, 33 stands for heavy commercial use. A class 33 floor is therefore built for heavily used areas in the home as well.
